Installing Computer Memory In PC

If you made a visit to one of those big computer stores in the mall, they would have told you that you will have to wait a few days to get your computer memory installed. Actually, installing computer memory in a PC takes just about a minute or so. The big stores take time because they have a lot of other things to attend to. They will also usually charge you a fee for replacing your memory.

This article will give you quick information with which you can install PC memory yourself. First, turn off your computer and unplug the power cable. Next, you will need to remove the cover of your tower unit. An ordinary screwdriver will be enough to do that job. Once you have removed the cover, you will be able to see the motherboard or a large printed circuit board with the RAM chips installed on them. If your motherboard and the insides of the cabinet are dusty, use a can of compressed air to remove the dust.

Once you locate the memory module or RAM chip that you want to replace, all you have to do is unlock the latches that hold it in place. Just pushing down on them gently will release them quickly. After the latches have been released, hold the chip on one end and pull up gently and it will come out of the slot. It is recommended that you keep one of your hands on a metal part when you pull out the chip as the contact with metal will act like a grounding agent and help you avoid the discharge of static electricity.

Place the removed memory module or RAM chip in a static free bag. To install the new PC memory, all you have to do is position the RAM chip along the grooves provided. Gently push down on it and both latches will snap into place automatically. It is really as simple as that. Though the installation process is very simple, one will need to know what sort of RAM needs to be installed on a computer. A PC is usually compatible with only a particular type of RAM such as DDR2 or DDR3. One would also need to know what speed the RAM should have to get the most out of the processor's performance.

Thus, it is recommended that you seek guidance on what RAM chip will suit your computer best. You can however install it yourself and save yourself time and money by avoiding the installation at a computer store.
